Ilana Ransom Toeplitz is an award-winning director, choreographer, writer, and teaching artist specializing in new musical development, musical comedy, and actor-driven storytelling. Her career spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, national and international tours, regional theatres across the country, the Boston Pops, and the development of hundreds of new musicals.
On Broadway, Ilana served as the SDCF Mike Ockrent Directing Fellow on Casey Nicholaw’s Tony-nominated The Prom and as Assistant Director on Leigh Silverman’s Tony-nominated Violet, starring Sutton Foster and Joshua Henry. She has also worked alongside artists including Stephen Sondheim, Susan Stroman, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Jeanine Tesori, Alan Cumming, Jason Alexander, Victoria Clark, and Jenn Colella.
Her directing credits include Reefer Madness! at New World Stages and 54 Below, Something Rotten! at Lyric Stage of Boston, Little Shop of Horrors at Greater Boston Stage Company, and productions and development work with Lincoln Center, The Drama League, York Theatre Company, Keen Company, New York Theatre Barn, Berkshire Theatre Group, the Adrienne Arsht Center, the Boston Center for the Arts, and the Ferguson Center for the Arts, among others. Her work has been recognized by the Boston Theatre Critics’ Association, including Critic’s Picks for both Something Rotten! and Little Shop of Horrors.
New work is at the heart of Ilana’s artistic practice. She was the inaugural Leo Shull New Musicals Directing Fellow with The Drama League and co-founded the New Musicals Lab at Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts, an incubator that developed nine new musicals through workshops, residencies, recordings, and public performances. She has collaborated with writers from the earliest stages of an idea through workshop, reading, and production, including Drew Gasparini, Stephen Kaplan, Michael Wartofsky, Natalie Tenenbaum, Gabriella Mirabella, Jessie Field, Lucy O’Brien, and many others.
Ilana has also had the extraordinary opportunity to work directly with Stephen Sondheim on multiple projects, including Sondheim on Sondheim with the Boston Pops and the Off-Broadway revisal of Marry Me A Little. Most recently, she made her Boston Pops directing debut with the Sondheim portion of American Titans: Bernstein & Sondheim at Tanglewood.
Ilana is an Assistant Professor in Emerson College’s BFA Musical Theatre program, where she teaches performance, movement, audition technique, professional preparation, and directing. She believes the best rehearsal rooms are generous, rigorous, curious, and joyful—and that artists should be prepared not simply to reprise someone else’s work, but to originate it.

ALBUM DROP & LIBRETTO RELEASED FOR LICENSING
Ilana directed and choreographed the world premiere of Drew Gasparini’s new song cycle WE AREN'T KIDS ANYMORE. The Original Cast Album (Feat: Bonnie Milligan, Raymond J. Lee, Lilli Cooper, Nickolas Christopher & Colton Ryan) dropped on April 12th. The Libretto will be released for licensing by Concord Theatricals.
WE AREN'T KIDS ANYMORE is a reflection on adulting. Drew pulls from personal experience about navigating relationships, trying to carve a name for oneself as an artist, and the fine line between wanting more and the dangers of excess. When each moment feels so big and important as it comes, how do you keep sight of meaning and balance in your art and in your life?
